STS 131 Launch!

The shuttle launched Monday at 6:21am. This was truly a spectacular pre-dawn launch to see. I watched from Banana Creek, which is a little over 3 miles from the pad. To see more photos click here.

The shuttle ended up launching today instead of on the 7th due to bad weather. This was the final night launch in the space shuttle program. The launch was absolutely amazing to see, and hopefully I'll be able to see the last four. To see more photos click here.

Countdown

Today we started setting up for the shuttle launch on Sunday. Remote cameras were placed around the pad with sound triggers. Photos from the launch coming soon-weather permitting.

Next week I will be heading to Florida to set up and photograph NASA's STS 130 shuttle launch. This will be the last night launch for the shuttle program, and after this launch only four launches will remain. February 7th is the launch date. Keep posted for photos.

This weekend I will be heading to Nashville with some friends for Imaging USA! We will be part of the student volunteers helping out at the event. I can't wait to go to some of the classes, and learn from the photographers at the event.

Shuttle Rollout

Today I had the amazing opportunity to photograph the Endeavour Space Shuttle Rollout. The shuttle was much larger than I expected. The Florida weather was also much colder than I was planning for, but having numb fingers was worth the experience of a lifetime. Hiking in North GA

While looking for some lenses for my 4x5, I found an interesting adapter-canon digital camera to a 4x5 back. I'm not quite sure how this would compare to a canon tilt-shift lens, but I think it would be interesting to test out.

Internship

For the past few weeks I have been interning with a forensic photographer- Jimmy Brown (he also photographs NASA space shuttle launches check out his website here). I absolutely love the internship (yeah I realize I'm a little crazy for liking it, but hey...). During my internship, I've been shooting with a Nikon, and being a Canon dork I never really use Nikon's, but I've realized how much I like them and maybe one of these days I'll get one for myself.

This weekend I went to Savannah to take some portraits for my portfolio. The reason I chose to go there was because of a really cool hidden area that I found a few years ago (I call it the sand place). I always wanted to photograph the area, and finally got my chance. Tax day & Tea Parties

Last night I went to photograph the Atlanta tea party protest. Overall it was a peaceful protest, but wow was it crowded! People were in trees and it was hard to get around. From what I hear the Atlanta tea party had the most turn out (around 15,000 people).

The Red Dress

For my portfolio class, we had to do a commercial shot. I decided to shoot this red dress and put a heart around it. I got this idea from the Go Red for Women movement- for the fight against heart disease (part of the American Heart Association).

This week is the final week for our winter quarter at school. I'm looking forward to the break, and starting my internship after the break. Right now I need to focus on completing all my final projects. Above is a shot I took of a shack near some shrimp boats, I thought it was cool because the light was on during the day!

Photo Walk

Yesterday, I went on a photo walk with some classmates at Gwinnett Tech. I had a great time, we all split up into groups and went to different locations- can't wait for the next photo walk on Sunday.
I'm going through the photos I took right now, and one of the problems I'm running into with my new 5D is the massive file sizes. Each photo takes up a lot of space (around 25MB), and photoshop is a little slower when editing photos, so I'm thinking about using the smaller RAW files (15-11MB) instead of the full 21 mega-pixles in some situations. Although, if I want to end up printing a large photo, the full file size will be better to use when shooting. The files are not too much of an issue, but something to think about.

Commercial class

In commercial class this week, we shot wine, beer, and spirits. Although, I'm under 21, so I had to choose something non-alchoholic. I chose to shoot sparkling cherry juice, above you can see my setup, and I will be posting my final image once I get it back from good 'ol E6.

I've had my Canon Rebel XT for a few years now, and have been saving for a newer, more professional camera. I was not expecting it to be so hard to find the new camera I wanted, but today I finally got it (the Canon 5D Mark 2)- yay! I didn't get the kit, so I'm thinking about getting a new lens- any suggestions?

Disney with my G10

While in Orlando it was hard to resist not going to Disney. It just happened to be my brother's b-day, and apparently you can get into Disney for free on your birthday. So that sealed the deal for us, and we decided to go for a day. Unfortunately, with all the excitement of going, I forgot to bring my SLR camera to the park...but I did find my Canon G10 in my purse (an awesome alternative camera to use). Today photo classes started back! We had portfolio development class this morning, so now its time for me to gather all my old photos from this past year. I started by going through my B&W film from 1st quarter and my 4x5's from 2nd quarter. Above is a photo I took from my first 4x5 class. When I first started out, I really disliked using the large format camera, but now it has to be one of my favorite cameras.

Because of the economic crisis going on lately, a question arises...photograph for free when people are cutting back the spending? Today, we took the Holiday portrait set down today. It was bitter-sweet, because we spent a lot of time and effort building the set and it was sad to see it all torn down, but I think we are all glad that the work for that project is over now! Yay, good job to everyone who worked the portraits!

For photographers rainy, dreary days/nights are not so good, but don't let the rain stop you from taking pictures (although, I have to admit sometimes I do use the weather as an excuse to "take a break" from photography). So go take pictures and experiment, sometimes the rainy, fogy weather can actually give a nice mood to a photograph.

This is one of the fashion shots I did of my sister. I was hoping to do a fashion shoot with my cousin, because I think she looks like a model. She is in Juilliard's Ballet program, I don't get to see her much anymore, just on the holidays. So I thought since she's coming to Georgia for Thanksgiving we could do a fashion shoot while she is here. Unfortunately, I was not planning on it raining the whole time. Oh well...but I am pleased with how this photo turned out of my sister.

Hope everyone's Thanksgiving went well! So, tomorrow is black Friday, and that means if you decide to...get a couple hours of sleep, than you can get some good deals on camera/computer equipment- like hard drives (I'm going out to get a hard drive, since my old one is dead). Target has a deal on a 750gig hard drive for 80 bucks, and best buy is supposed to have some great deals too. So happy shopping!

Canon 5D Mark ll Ships Tomorrow!

The new Canon 5D Ships tomorrow! I've been saving for this camera, and I'm ready to ditch my old Rebel for something better. Unfortunately, I think I may have to wait a while to get one, since it seems they are in high demand...and I doubt anyone in the Atlanta area is going to have one available :( Anyway, watch the awesome Reverie video (not the youtube version) shot with the 5D and see how they made it.

Yesterday, me and Sarah shot a wedding. It's my first wedding, so I was really excited, it was a great experience! The family was really nice, and the bride was beautiful. I had a great time shooting.

Photoshop CS4

I just got Adobe Photoshop CS4 a few days ago, and I've been trying it out. It has some cool new features, but I still seem to go back to CS3 when working up my images...I think its because I'm use to the layout of CS3, and honestly, I don't see the need to upgrade to CS4, but hey, maybe my mind will be changed once I get use to all the workings.

I love my little brother, but why, oh why....I was in the middle of moving files to my hard drive and he comes in and picks my hard drive up....than drops it on the floor....Thankfully, I have all my files backed-up on CDs, but I'm out a hard drive now. So, a lesson to all always keep your files in at least two places.

Fire!

Last night, as I was coming home from shooting for my final four, I saw a fire engine and decided to follow it. Well, I didn't have to drive far. The street was blocked off, with fire engines everywhere. I got some shots, but the firemen didn't want me getting too close, and the fire was in a home out in the woods, but the police officer was awesome and let me take pictures of the street scene.

Today I was scouting out a place to do my fashion assignment, and I found it! It's actually not far from my home (yay!) So I took some test shots, than got my model to come out, and I think the shoot went well. Now I'll be working up the images and find the best shot to turn in. I decided to try out the "cereal bag" flash soft box (Amy posted about how to make one) this morning while eating a bowl of Trix (why they are no longer in the shapes of fruit...I have no idea). Anyway, the flash was set up to hit the cereal directly, than I placed the bag over the flash, but kept the flash in the same position. here are the results of the shoot:

Annie Leibovitz at Work

Wednesday, me and Jessica went to Atlanta to try and get some post election photos, but as you might have herd, nothing was going on the day after...Although we did find some pigeons that were not afraid of humans, and got some pictures of them. It seems even this bird was non-active that day.

So I went to my local Circuit City in Buford today to see all the store closing sells. Right now all cameras, camera bags, tripods, and Epson paper is 10% off. Personally, I'm going to wait for the prices to go even lower, but you may find some good deals on camera equipment at a Circuit City near you, so go check it out!
